A
shok Leyland, flagship of
the Hinduja Group, has
formed a strategic alliance
with SUN Mobility, promoted
by Chetan Maini, founder of Reva,
and Uday Khemka, Vice Chairman of
SUN Group. This global partnership
will leverage India’s innovation and
engineering potential to develop
world-class electric mobility solutions
based on smart battery interchange
station that do battery swapping and
charging. The alliance has not yet
floated a joint venture company for
this. Both the companies together will
invest about Rs 100 crore.
Vinod K Dasari, CEO and Managing
Director of Ashok Leyland said, “At
Ashok Leyland we have always
leveraged Indian engineering and
innovation to develop world- class
solutions. The partnership with Sun
Mobility is yet another step towards
bringing world- class solutions to India,
developed in India, and by Indians.
We are proud of this partnership and
hope to bring several new innovative
products to the market at the earliest.”
Chetan Maini, Vice Chairman of SUN
Mobility, said, “With this partnership,
SUN Mobility hopes to create a
strategic alliance in the area of
mass electric mobility by deploying
market-leading integrated ecosystem
comprising Ashok Leyland’s state-
of-the art electric vehicles and our
proprietary smart batteries along with
a network of quick battery interchange
stations. This partnership will help
the nation move masses through
an efficient, pollution-free and cost-
competitive solution for electric
mobility.”
Ashok Leyland has been a pioneer
in electric buses, hybrid buses, in
both CNG and diesel, including
those that do not require a plug-in
support. SUN Mobility aims to be
the leading provider of universal
energy infrastructure and services
to accelerate mass electric vehicle
usage. It will deploy a unique open-
architecture ecosystem built around
its proprietary smart batteries
and a network of quick battery
interchange stations. These stations,
predominantly powered by renewable
energy, will refuel electric vehicles at a
cost lower than and speed faster than
the conventional fuel stations.
Innovation has been the key for Ashok
Leyland and the company wants to
create a niche for itself in electric
mobility. The company was the first
and the only manufacturer to achieve
BS-III emission compliance using a
mechanical fuel pump.It had sold over
one lakh BS-III compliant vehicles with
mechanical fuel pump when its peers
banked on electronic counterpart.
The company also pioneered the
development of a SCR-based BS-IV
solution in 2010.
In 2017, Ashok Leyland developed an
innovative EGR based BS-IV solution,
called iEGR technology which is
out-of-the box thinking unlike the
SCR technology that needs urea as
additional input. During the last three
months the company sold over 10,
BS-IV vehicles with iEGR technology.
As the iEGR vehicle solution is
performing well, Ashok Leyland is
