Camper Trailer Action — Issue 104 2017

(Elle) #1
There’s nothing quite like a nice hot shower
after a few days in the bush, and there’s
literally no negative associated with owning a
hot water shower system apart from the initial
purchase price. In terms of value for money,
they’re hard to beat. Not only do they make
camping more comfortable, they allow you to
camp without public facilities for longer which
could potentially save you hundreds of dollars
in camping fees.

PORTABLE
HOT WATER SYSTEMS

Portable hot water systems provide a cost
effective and self contained hot water shower
solution. In this case, portability also means
versatility, which is arguably this designs major
benefi t. They feature a built in battery which
supplies power to the water pump, and heat
the water using portable LPG canisters. The
drawback is they require setting up before use
and as the pump is battery operated, there’s
always the chance of the battery going fl at.
They’re quite bulky which takes up valuable
cargo space and the design doesn’t respond
well to water with any contaminants such as
sand or silty river water. But as there are no
installation costs, for under $500 your whole
family could enjoy instant hot water anywhere,
anytime.

Average Price Range: $250 - $420

DIESEL
HOT WATER SYSTEMS
Diesel hot water systems are very efficient
and have earned a reputation of superior
reliability and longevity. Within minutes
of operation, you’ll have hot water
wherever you need it, and the system’s
internal design is much more resilient
to contaminated water sources. Diesel is
found throughout the country so topping
up the fuel tank is never an issue unlike
gas-powered competitors. Maintenance is
inevitable, and although they’re initially on
the steep side of the price bracket, they can
truly revolutionise your camper’s entire hot
water system.

Average Price Range: $2400 – $2900

ELECTRIC
HOT WATER SYSTEMS
Permanently mounted 12V/240V hot water systems
usually heat the water within a small water storage
tank which can actually take up to 30 minutes. Their
high power consumption and sometimes lengthy
operation times could mean power boosting up-
grades to your 12V system may be required to han-
dle the extra load. If you’re not handy on the tools,
installation costs can also add to the bill. Overall
this system is simple to use, but its performance is
maximised when mains power is available.

Average Price Range: $340 - $950
