tyre pressures and you’ll have an absolute blast
in the Lincoln National Park.
The sand dunes on the coast of South Australia
are huge and are a fun challenge to drive. For
the handful you can’t drive, sand boards are the
perfect alternative for a day of family fun. We
waxed up old skateboards and raced down the
slopes – talk about cheap thrills, you’ll quickly
master the technique and be challenging each
other to see who can stand up for the longest!
The area around Port Lincoln is an excellent
spot to stay and you’ll fi nd there is plenty
to see and do. It pays to have a look at all
the campgrounds before settling into camp
because although the fi rst spot you see could
be fantastic, the next one could be absolutely
perfect. From Lincoln National Park drive
west into Coffi n Bay National Park and be
prepared for some of the best campsites
you’ve ever seen. The stand out is Black
Springs Campground which has some simple
facilities and the sites are literally three steps
from the sand on the beach. At this spot
there’s excellent fi shing and snorkelling and
at sunset you can see dolphins swimming just
a couple of metres off-shore. Black Springs
Campground has fantastic safe fi shing for
parents who want to teach their kids.
We met up with another traveller at Black
Springs Campground and tackled the soft sand
of Sensation Beach – it’s a barrel of fun to drive
and you won’t have any trouble if you’ve had
sand driving experience and have made sure
your tyres are dropped to a suitable pressure.
After a few days in Coffi n Bay National
Park when you can fi nally drag yourself away,

QBEST TIME TO TRAVEL:
It is recommended to avoid the hot
summer months if on the Googs Track and
Gawler Ranges. Fire restrictions apply from
the fi rst of November to the end of April.
March is an ideal time to travel if you want
to experience the best of it.
QWHAT TO TAKE:
To travel the Gawler Ranges and Googs
track you will need to be 100% self-
suffi cient. You will need to take rated
recovery gear as the sand can get very soft.
There are many small towns on the coast
of the Eyre Peninsular so you can probably
get away with leaving some spare parts at
home when travelling in that area.
A trailer means you’ve always got
access to kitchen facilities which
makes lunch so much easier
The top of Pildappa Rock is an
amazing sight with interesting
features and a cracking view
Fantastic fun and free –
pack an old skateboard
and challenge the kids to
see who can surf down
the dunes the furthest
