ETIQUETTE
With any member of the public free to
jump onto a UHF and have a chat, citizen
band radio, or CB, relies heavily on us to
use it properly and only for its intended
purpose. Avoid general chit-chat on
repeater channels 1-8 (and 41-48 on 80
channel units). Keep these channels free
for people who might actually need to use
the repeater function.
Also aim to keep general conversations to
a minimum on channel 40, which is largely
used for truckies, and only use channel
5 in the event of an emergency, as it’s an
emergency-only channel. In the outback
when you want to overtake a road train,
it’s best to check with the truck driver on
channel 40 that it’s safe to overtake.
Always remember that the UHF channels
are public channels and this means people
can listen in on your conversation, so keep
profanities to a minimum! Avoid resting the
microphone between your leg and the seat
when 4WDing as you can accidently engage
the mic button.
