EMERGENCY

COMMUNICATION

So you’ve just been involved in an accident, you have no mobile reception and there’s no-

one responding to the emergency UHF channel. What communication options do you have?

HF RADIOS

Installing a HF radio in your 4WD will give
you a much, much greater radio distance
when compared to a UHF. The one catch
with a HF radio is that you legally require
a licence to use one, but for the security it
adds, it’s well worth getting the licence.

SAT PHONES

Anyone who travels remotely, whether it’s with
their family or not, should carry a sat phone.
Sat phones provide telephone communication
regardless of where you are. They can also be
hired, so if your budget doesn’t cover purchasing
one, then you can hire one for a reasonable price.

PERSONAL LOCATING BEACONS
A Personal Locator Beacon or EPIRB (Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon) are emergency
devices which utilise the international satellite system for search and rescue. When activated, they
work by sending out distress signals which allow emergency services to hone in on your location
using GPS. Like a sat phone, PLBs and EPIRBs can be hired.
