Toe in and toe out are a major part of tyre wear. When you perform steering
upgrades or repairs like replacing a worn tie rod end, you should always get your
toe in/toe out checked.
Toe in and toe out refers to the way your tyres point. Toe in means when you
look from the front your tyres are pointing in and toe out means from the same
angle they look like they are pointing out.
When sitting straight, this is adjusted by winding your tie rod forward or
backwards so the thread on the tie rod ends pull into the rod or pushes out from
the rod. You may have adjusted the tie rod to be the same as your original one
but it only takes half a turn to affect the drag on your tyres from a little too much
in or out.

Camber adjustment is an issue that often affects lifted 4WDs. This is more
prominent with IFS models but can also affect solid axle 4WDs. You should
always get the camber checked if you lift your truck as this will change
your steering geometry and cause the tyres to wear more on the outside
edges from too much positive camber. This can be an issue in trucks that
have merely been lifted by fi tting taller springs or spaces, without also
making the required adjustments to bring camber back into spec.
Caster is the adjustment of the angle of your diffs. For example when you
lift your truck above 2inches you will have to insert caster bushes or caster
plates to bring these angles back to original specs. These plates or bushes
roll your diff back into its factory positon, if left unadjusted it’ll affect your
camber as well as your caster angle. The best way to see it is if you don’t roll
your diff back your hubs will be at the wrong angle as the diff is set up with a
measured amount of camber from factory.

Fitting the correct tyres to your 4WD is the fi rst step in tyre maintenance.
If you run a tyre that is physically too wide for the rims on your truck you
will have an excessive bulge in the side wall. This will put more pressure
on the shoulder of the tread and wear your tyres quicker. You can make
sure you have the right tyres by checking the rim size on the tyre placard
inside the driver’s door, and on the inside of the rim. If you can’t see size
get the wheel pulled off and check the rim size before you get your tyres.
