T
he connected cars will open new business avenues and the revenue opportunity
in Asia alone is estimated to be USD 53 billion. But the new technologies that
make these huge openings will disrupt the existing scenario drastically. The
catch-up game for every stakeholder in the eco system is going to be tough. The
development in sensors, crucial for connected vehicles, is increasing. Their sensitivity has
overtaken the need for human beings in the past one year. Employment is a clear casualty.
Though accidents concerning connected vehicles are minimal, the amount of space they
occupy in the print and online media is enormous. This is because of the sensitivity of the
subject. One school of thought is that the connected vehicles can be safe in dedicated
roads and highways. The reason for this is that the connected vehicles would enable all
traffic to seamlessly observe the other vehicles and therefore, avert accidents. Though
we are not sure whether it is achievable, the need of the hour is to focus more on testing
equipment as prevention is always better than cure. Testing is crucial and the industry
needs path-breaking solutions swiftly.
The Cover Story of this edition is on one of the leading OEMs in India – the Mahindra
Group - focussing on vendor development and supply chain management. The
company that introduced utility vehicle to India in 1947 still remains the country’s leading
manufacturer of such vehicles. Mahindra is present in 20 key industrial segments including
two-wheelers, three- wheelers, passenger vehicles, utility vehicles, tractors, trucks and
construction equipment. The company has made small inroads into the aviation sector
too. The story is all about how their wide presence enable both the company and its
vendors to grow.
AutoParts Asia participated in one of the leading testing exhibitions – Automotive Testing
Expo - held in Novi, Michigan. You will find a report on the exhibition in this issue. In
addition, we have an in-depth interview with the Chief Sustainability Officer of the Volvo
Group, and other regular features.
Happy Reading.
