Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson play the
concerned parents of Auggie (Room’s Jacob
Tremblay), their 10-year-old son with Treacher Collins
Syndrome, a genetic craniofacial disorder, who’s
struggling with blending in with his classmates at
a mainstream school. Good thing Auggie has his
back covered by his family, friends (well, some of
them) and teachers (Mandy Patinkin, can you be my
life coach?) In lesser hands, this feel-good drama,
adapted from RJ Palacio’s 2012 best-selling novel
by The Perks of Being a Wallpaper director Stephen
Chbosky, could’ve been a mawkish Lifetime Movie of
the Week, but it rarely crosses that line. Even if you
do find it a tad too sentimental, so what? Nothing
wrong in imagining a world where everyone is kind
Wonder (PG)
and considerate. Bonus for Star Wars fans: look out for
a cameo by a beloved character.
