EXERCISEI work out every day for two hours. I do
Tracy Anderson Method and SoulCycle. I do an hour-long
dance-cardio class and then an hour of toning. I started
doing it eight years ago. I need high-intensity workouts
to keep me engaged and make me feel like I’m going to die afterwards.
I don’t feel like my day has started until I get my workout done. Exercise
makes me feel strong, happy, calm and more confident.
GUILTY PLEASUREChocolate. I eat Peanut Butter M&M’s®in the morning
with my tea.

DIETI always start my day with two glasses of water, either
with fresh-squeezed lemon or a little bit of sea salt if I’m
dehydrated, and a double-black espresso.
HEALTHI take acidophilus, vitamin D and fish oil every day. Everything else
I figure you can get from food.
SLEEPI rarely need help to fall asleep, but if I have to shut off my brain,
I either take an Epsom salts bath, which delivers magnesium to the body,
or I’ll have a magnesium supplement. Magnesium does a good job of
relaxing every muscle in the body.
GUILTY PLEASUREIlove a well-made Martini (with three olives) on
a Saturday night.

SLEEPI have this fantasy of sleeping without electronics
close to the bed, but I do have baby monitors and alarm
clocks and all sorts of things. Wearing pyjamas is important.
It’s something I picked up from my kids – the ritual of getting them ready
for bed. I was like, Oh, I should do the same thing.
BEAUTYI drink a lot of water and coconut water, and use products from
Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost line, which contain hyaluronic acid to encourage
your skin to stay hydrated. And I’m religious about taking my make-up off
before bed. I believe in double cleansing. And I protect my skin with SPF.

DIETI don’t like to use up my calories on an energy bar:
I am an American – I like everything supersized.
CHILLWhen I travel, I take along pictures, keepsakes and
energy stones with me to make my hotel room feel a little
more like home. I also pack in a framed poem my mom gave me to keep
at my bedside.
GUILTY PLEASUREChampagne. It’s the best. And I don’t see why I have to
give it up.

FIX YOUR GUT
Meet the new technology
that analyses your gut
bacteria to find the best
food for your body

If you haven’t already heard, there
are trillions of microscopic
organisms (fungi, bacteria,
viruses) all over your body. But
researchers have been particularly
interested in the bacteria in your
gut, which may affect your risk
of certain autoimmune diseases,
digestive problems, cancer,
diabetes and more.

That’s probably why you’ve
heard so much about probiotics,
supplements said to encourage the
growth of disease-fighting ‘good
bacteria’ in your gut.
Problem is, ‘the amount of
bacteria in probiotic pills is
incredibly small compared to the
number already in your gut,’ says
Frederic D Bushman, professor of
microbiology at the University
of Pennsylvania. So what can you
do to boost your gut health? ‘For
one, eat more fibre, which may
promote good bacteria,’ he says.
You can also work with your
existing gut bacteria to make
healthier choices. ‘Each person
has a unique combination
of microorganisms in their gut,’
says Naveen Jain, founder
of Viome, a service that determines
exactly which foods are best for
you based on your particular gut
bacteria and metabolism. ‘These
microorganisms affect how you
metabolise food, so the foods that
are healthy for me might not be
healthy for you.’

Keep in mind, there’s a lot we still
need to learn about all the bacteria
in our guts, so you may want
to take the results of a test like
Viome’s with a pinch of salt. But the
idea of personalised nutrition based
on gut bacteria is a promising one.
In 2015, Israeli researchers tracked
the diets and corresponding blood-
sugar responses of 800 people and
found that participants did indeed
have different responses to the
same foods, likely because of the
microbes in their guts.
