The atrocities that have occurred in Myanmar have shocked
the world, with countless Rohingya refugees fleeing into
Malaysia to escape torture, rape and death. But there is
a glimmer of hope and a chance to heal owing to a few
women who have started the Rohingya Women Theatre
in Malaysia. Through performance art, the women are
acknowledging their trauma and building confidence, and
are using the platform to help other refugees to deal with
domestic abuse and the shock of being arrested.A COLLABORATION FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS
Cecilia Bartoli is the first woman to sing with the legendary
Sistine Chapel Choir, in addition to being the first woman
to record inside the Vatican City’s most famous chapel.
In a truly moving collaboration for Advent and Christmas,
Cecilia and the choir performed ‘Beata Viscera’ by
thirteenth-century composer Pérotin.MEXICO

Not only is Maria de Jesús Patricio
Martínez the first indigenous
woman to run for the Mexican
presidency, she is also a traditional
doctor from the Nahua community
in the state of Jalisco, and founder
of the Calli Tecolhuacateca Tochan
health centre. She is determined to
conquer corruption, inequality and
violence in Mexico, and is backed
even by the infamous left-wing
militant group Zapatista Army of
National Liberation. The election
will take place mid-2018 and,
although experts doubt she will
claim the presidency, it is a sign
of changing times that she was
able to gain this kind of political
