Johnny Helms was Cycling Weekly’s resident cartoonist from February 1946 until November 2009.
Put names to faces
On pages 6-7 of the November
16 issue of Cycling Weekly is a
picture of what I imagine is the
GB pursuit team. In the third paragraph
of the article you state the names of the
team members but unless one is very
familiar with track racing it is impossible
to know which rider is which. The matter
is similar when you are at the velodrome
watching the event.
I am sure you would agree that it
would be easier both for the readers
of your organ and the spectators at
the event, if the names of the riders
were shown on their helmets. In other
sports the names of players are shown
on their shirts, so why should cycling
not follow suit?
I cannot imagine that the UCI or British
Cycling has any rules for forbidding the
showing of names on helmets (both
on the track and on the road) and thus
if BC were to introduce the practice it
would make life easier for spectators and
readers and it is likely that in due course
the rest of the world would follow suit.

Home comforts
In the November 16 issue of CW,
Trevor Gilbert took umbrage at
someone suggesting the use of a
turbo trainer during the winter.
While I’m sure he used to ride 50
miles through snow going uphill
each way 47 years ago, it doesn’t
change the fact that training and
technology is changing. Why ride
in dangerous, icy conditions so
you can brag to your club about
being hardcore when you can do
as much specifi c training as you’d like
from the comfort of home?

Bright idea
In response to the letter from Sue Walters
in the November 23 issue, about bright,
fl ashing bike lights, I would like to point
out that it is similar for cyclists on cycle
paths when cycling towards oncoming
cars but I would never consider asking
car drivers to reduce the brightness of
their lights.
I think Sue should consider whether
she should be driving a car if she has a
migraine as she may pose a danger to
other road users.

Catford memories
I wonder how many of your readers can
say “I was there” about the 1938 Catford
hill-climb in your photography archive.
I rode there from our Crayford home
on the back of my father’s tandem, my
mother on her own bike.
Having seen a number of riders, some
being unable to get the pedal
over and gently falling to the
side to be caught by onlookers,
I lost interest.
At the top I found a lady selling
fruit cake, but had no money,
just a hungry look. I returned to
my parents eating a slice of cake,
only to be taken back to pay. As
we walked away I was given
another slice to keep hidden.
Years later, leading a club run,
we climbed Yorks Hill to the tea
stop near the top.
