t’s easy for us cyclists to
feel like the embattled
users of the UK’s roads.
It’s not uncommon to encounter
abuse or even violence just for
being on our bikes, and barely a
week goes by when another paltry
fi ne or suspended sentence is
handed out to a driver responsible
for serious injury or worse.
So hats off to Surrey Police and
their road policing unit’s Twitter
account (@SurreyRoadCops) that
recently took to task some bright
spark who warned us all that we
should stick to the extreme left of
the road “so people can overtake
you without risking their lives”.
Now you and I know this is all
kinds of stupid, but while the ‘get
out of my way’ attitude behind the
tweet isn’t surprising, the thought
that they have to overtake even if
it’s dangerous, really is. Thankfully
Surrey Police were straight on it,
putting @fl eurjongepier right on
cyclists’ rights and overtaking.
This doesn’t guarantee
@fl eurjongepier will turn into a
considerate driver over night, but
at least they haven’t caused anyone
any injury before being put right.
It’s responses like this that
earned them the title of Best
