he Moon was supposed
turn a coppery-red in a
lunar eclipse early
yesterday but for much of
the UK skies were
blanketed in thick grey clouds.
But apart from lunar eclipses, the
Moon also exerts all sorts of powers
on Earth. Most obviously the Moon’s
gravity pulls the world’s oceans into
tides. And ever since ancient times
there was a belief that the Moon
could influence the weather, with
people watching the Moon to
forecast changes, although this was
dismissed in a rhyme 140 years ago,
“The moon and the weather
May change together,
But change of the moon
Does not change the weather.”
But a recent study found that the
Moon does have a very slight
influence on temperatures. The
Moon goes around the Earth in a
plane just 5 degrees off from the
Earth’s orbit around the Sun. And so
over a cycle of 18.6 years, the Moon
weaves a path slightly north and
south of the Earth’s equator. This
can be seen in slight changes in
extremes of where the Moon rises
and sets, and also its highest and
lowest elevation in the sky. This
affects the tides and how warm
water from the surface of oceans
mixes with colder water from below,
which in turn influences how rapidly
the sea absorbs heat.
And so the Moon can warm or
cool the globe by about 0.04C at the
extremes of its 18.6-year cycle. This
tiny effect is imperceptible but is
enough to be accounted for in
computer simulations of climate
change, with a very slight decrease
in global temperatures in the 2020s
and is expected to fractionally
increase in the 2030s. These
changes are easily dwarfed, though,
by the rise in world temperatures
from greenhouse gas emissions.
The 18.6-year lunar cycle itself has
been known since prehistoric times.
The ancient stones of Callanish on
the Isle of Lewis, western Hebrides,
were built about 5,000 years ago and
are aligned with the extreme of the
lunar cycle when the Moon reaches
its most extreme rising and setting
points of the horizon.
