Golf Digest South Africa — January 2018

(Tuis.) #1

ROOKIE WINNERS
Rookies winning in their first season were
Doug McCabe (Rustenburg), in his first
outing in his home North West Open, and
Pieter Cooper (Wingate Park), who sealed a
maiden win in his third outing, at Cotswold
Downs in KZN. Both McCabe, and Ferdie
van der Merwe (Wellington) played just the
once all year.
Former Sunshine Tour pro Craig Kamps
(Bryanston) finished second in his Senior
debut at the Ekurhuleni Open.
Older players performed creditably as
usual. Ian Smith (Houghton) won the
Northern Cape Open at age 69; Steve
Cullen (Mount Edgecombe) the KZN
Open at 63; Adrian Kriel (Wingate Park)
the Winelands Open at 62; and Lynton
Beckett (Royal Durban) the Limpopo title
at 61. Smith and 66-year-old Wellington
(Kyalami) each played in
21 of the 25 tournaments.
Attie Burger (Uitenhage), 52, was one
of the most improved players on the

(^)
rankings, climbing to No 6 with two wins,
his first, in his native Eastern Cape, while
Brian Mampies (Parow), Richard Bruyns
(River Club) and Colin Mavuso (Royal
Port Alfred) made significant rises. Mavuso
was also a first-time winner at the Border
Open, as was Ludwig Albutt (Kroonstad) at
the Free State Open.
Sadly, 2017 saw the passing of Eastern
Cape star Zola Konzani, 56, who won the
2015 SA Senior Amateur at Humewood.
The top 50 players on the rankings
have qualified for the 7th Senior Players
Championship at Sun City on February
11-12. The event has a new main sponsor
in PwC, with Super Group Dealerships the
supporting sponsor.
In 50th spot was the former Springbok
and 1980 SA Amateur champion Etienne
Groenewald (Centurion). Central Gauteng
had the most representatives in the top 50,
with 11, followed by Gauteng North with
nine, and Ekurhuleni six.
