JAN THE MAN
Jan Molby Orion Books 1999
Jan Molby found favour with
both Liverpool and Swansea
supporters during his football
career, and tales of his times at
Anfield and the Vetch Field are
chronicled in this entertaining
book written with journalist
Grahame Lloyd.
Of all his accomplishments with
the Reds he recalls winning the
FA Cup to complete a league-
and-cup double as the moment
when he was truly appreciated
by people back in Denmark. Jan
played a starring role in the 3-1
win over Everton and recalled:
“The final has been described as
the pinnacle of my career, but
until the first goal I was having an
indifferent game. I was struggling
because I'd been ill with food
poisoning and hadn't played for
a while. Luckily it all came right
for us in the end.
“To me, setting up a goal with
a lovely pass is as wonderful
as scoring a goal in itself. To
play in an FA Cup final, make
two goals, to have such
an impact...the 1986 Cup
final has to be the greatest
moment of my career.”
- Big-fight poster
As it's Boxing Day this afternoon
we put the focus on a poster for
a 1930s bout that took place at
Anfield (if you'll pardon the pun).
In a bid to boost club finances
during that decade, the stadium
gates were opened to a number
of other sporting events
including boxing.
Indeed between the years 1931
and 1949 a total of 148 bouts
were staged in front of the Kop.
One of the most famous
A HISTORY OF LIVERPOOL FC IN 100 OBJECTS
took place on 20 September
1934 when 31,213 fans saw
local favourite Nel Tarleton
narrowly miss out on the world
featherweight title, losing on
points to America’s Freddie Miller.
Four years later in another
world-title fight Peter Kane won
the flyweight belt against Jackie
Jurich. This poster promoted the
final eliminator for that contest
which saw Kane, who hailed from
Golborne in Lancashire, take on
Northern Irishman Jim Warnock.
