Gladbach all over: BMG boys and girls in town for 25th visit

Around midday today, all being
well, 75 supporters of Borussia
Moenchengladbach arrived for the
match against Swansea City, having
left their hometown on Christmas
Day at 6pm to begin their annual
pilgrimage to Anfield. It's their 25th
consecutive friendship visit (since
1992) to Liverpool and the club is
delighted to welcome them.
It's almost 45 years since Liverpool

to receive a cheque for 21,000
deutschmarks (approximately
£7,000) collected by Borussia fans
for the Hillsborough families.
Liverpool fan Graham Agg, who
organises a reciprocal visit from
Liverpool to Gladbach, says: “The
hospitality that's been shown to
me and fellow Reds during our
annual visits to Gladbach has to
be seen to be believed. They are
without doubt the greatest fans in
Germany, from a working-class city
with a love of their team on a par
with our own, and this a friendship
unique in world football.
“This year is special as it's their
25th consecutive visit to support
the Reds. We'll greet them as they
greet us in Germany, with open arms
and lots of Scouse hospitality in The
Albert [pub] where they congregate
before and after the match!”

played Borussia in the 1973 UEFA Cup
final when the first friendships were
formed. Of course the teams met again
in the 1977 European Cup final and the
subsequent season's semi-finals. BMG
were also the guests for former skipper
Emlyn Hughes' testimonial in 1979.
It has never been forgotten, either,
than in 1991 a delegation from Liverpool
FC, including ex-captain Ron Yeats and
director Sid Moss, flew to Germany
