LIVERPOOL GOALS PART FOURTEEN: 1952-54

64 JOHN EVANS
V BRISTOL ROVERS

Life in the Second Division didn't
start well for Liverpool who lost
five of their first seven matches
before this heartening 5-3 win
at Anfield. Centre-forward John

62 LOUIS BIMPSON V
CHELSEA 25 APRIL 1953
The early 1952/53 season was
a difficult one for the Reds who
found themselves at the wrong
end of the table. A 3-1 defeat at
Man United in the penultimate
fixture meant they went into their
final game, at home to Chelsea,
with both sides knowing defeat
could relegate them. Bill Jones got
the opener in the 33rd minute but
it remained a nervous Anfield until
Rainford-born Louis settled it with
a fine finish eight minutes from
time. Liverpool finished the season
in 17th while Chelsea also won their
final game to survive in 19th.

61 BOB PAISLEY V WOLVES
2 FEBRUARY 1952
Anfield's biggest-ever crowd of
61,905 saw Liverpool race into a
two-goal lead inside ten minutes
of an FA Cup fourth-round
clash with Wolves. Manager
Don Welsh had unsettled the
visitors by playing Billy Liddell
as a centre-forward instead of
a winger, and it was Bob who
took advantage with a well-
placed drive in the fifth minute.
The Liverpool Daily Post noted:
“When Wolves manager Stan
Cullis heard the Liverpool team
he made plans to curb Liverpool's
top-scorer Liddell and selected
England's captain Billy Wright to
police him. But Liverpool had a

63 ALAN ARNELL
V BLACKPOOL
5 DECEMBER 1953
Liverpool finished bottom of Division
One in 1953/54, winning only seven
games – yet many of them were
emphatic victories. Burnley were
beaten 4-0 at Anfield, Middlesbrough
4-1 and Aston Villa 6-1. The most
unexpected victory saw cup-holders
Blackpool – including Stanley
Matthews and Stan Mortensen – put
to the sword 5-2 in early December.
The fourth goal was a clever strike
by debutant Alan who'd been
signed from Worthing. He'd become
a regular marksman for the Reds,
netting 35 in 75 matches.

Evans, signed from Charlton
Athletic, got all five goals – a
feat only two other post-war
Liverpool players have since
managed: Ian Rush and Robbie
Fowler. Ultimately Evans scored
33 in all competitions during
season 1954/55.

plan to counter that move. They
kept it secret until the teams
came on the field. Liddell wore
a no11 jersey but he played at
centre-forward and the move
upset the Wolves completely.”
A second from Cyril Done soon
followed soon and the Reds
went on to win the tie 2-1.
