This is Anfield — Liverpool FC vs Swansea City — 26 December 2017

(Barry) #1
A superbly-taken goal by Rhian
Brewster set Liverpool on their
way to a 3-0 win over PSV
Eindhoven in the Premier League
International Cup last Tuesday.
The young Reds went into the
fixture at Prenton Park knowing
that only a victory would keep
alive their chances of reaching
the last eight. But from the
moment Brewster put them
ahead in the 11th minute, no other
outcome seemed likely.
U17s World Cup-winner
Brewster still had plenty to do
when centre-back Lloyd Jones
clipped a long pass towards him
20 yards from goal, but a fine
touch on his chest enabled him
to volley into the bottom corner.
Brewster then turned provider
for fellow attacker Harry Wilson
to double the advantage midway
through the first half with Ovie
Ejaria finding Brewster down the
left and Wilson calmly converting
the striker’s left-footed cross.

Brilliant Brewster volley as treble-scoring young Reds aim for cup's last eight

The Reds could even afford
to miss a penalty early in the
second period, with midfielder
Cameron Brannagan blazing
his spot-kick off the bar after
Brewster had been fouled by
Maxime Soulas.
The PSV man was dismissed
soon after for a second booking
after a foul on Ben Woodburn
and midfield man Matty Virtue
quickly added a third, beating
goalkeeper Mike van der
Meulenhof at his near-post after
latching on to a cushioned pass
from defender Corey Whelan.
The PSV stopper then made
several excellent saves to
prevent a rampant Liverpool side

from inflicting further damage in
their final outing of 2017.
Neil Critchley’s side end the
group stage with six points but
must now wait until PSV play at
Newcastle United on 24 January
to see if they've done enough to
advance to the quarter-finals.
The six group-winners and the
two best runners-up progress
to the last eight but this victory
means the Reds are in a strong
position to advance.
Liverpool: Kelleher, Whelan,
Jones, Johnston, Juanma,
Brannagan, Virtue, Ejaria (Alves),
Woodburn (Adekanye), Wilson,
Brewster (Kane). Subs not used:
Firth, Parker.
