He netted 65 goals in 202 leaguegames before becoming coach in May 1953and succeeded George Roughton as managerin September 1955. Discoveries such as TerryPaine, Martin Chivers and Mick Channonwere blended with experienced signings ashe guided Saints from Division Three to One,an FA Cup Semi-Final and UEFA Cup entrybefore handing control to Lawrie McMenemyin December 1973. He became Saints’ chiefexecutive and a director, then club president.Popularly known as ‘Mr Southampton’, he wasawarded the MBE and made a Freeman of theCity in 2001.
