Portuguese

Initially a defensive midfielder,

he converted to centre-back

on his elevation to the Nagoya

Grampus first team in 2007. Joined

Southampton in August 2012

following a two-year stint with

Dutch side VVV-Venlo. Won the

first of his 75 caps for Japan in 2010.

Signed from Lazio in August for a

reported fee of around £15m. Made

his debut in the 2-0 home loss to

Watford in September. Began his

career at AZ Alkmaar with his debut

against Greek club PAOK. Recently

passed 100 senior club appearances.

Southampton academy graduate.

His first senior game was an FA

Cup Fifth Round tie at Sunderland

in 2014. Following a spell on loan

at Southend United in 2015/16, he

appeared in 20 games for Saints last

season. Capped once by England at

Under-21 level.

English

Came through Southampton’s youth

ranks, making his senior debut

in a League Cup tie at Millwall in

August 2014. Named Saints’ Young

Player of the Year at the end of that

season. Played for Scotland Under-

19s, before switching allegiance to

England in 2013.

a reported fee of around £5m

in July. Debuted for the Polish

club at the age of just 17 in 2013.

Gained experience during a

season-long loan at Gornik Leczna

Poland last year.

Joined Saints from Nice in August

2016. Began his career with Lyon

where he was a member of the

side which won the 2012 Coupe de

France. During his early days with

Lyon he spent a season on loan at

Metz. Capped once at Under-21 level

for France.

French

Signed from Plymouth Argyle in

April 2011 at the age of 17 by which

time he had featured in six games for

the Pilgrims. Subsequently sent out

on loan to gain further experience,

he had two spells at Swindon

Town as well as shorter stints with

Middlesbrough and Coventry City.
