in November 1907 when Fulham
beat them 2-0 at Craven Cottage
thanks to goals from Alex Fraser
and Fred Threlfall. The Whites’
biggest win came in March 1912
when they beat City 7-2 at home
and Leeds’ largest victory over
Fulham came in February 1911
when they won 3-1 at Elland Road.
Leeds United took over from City
in 1920 after they were disbanded
by the Football League over an
illegal payments scandal.

EGGAT, GRAHAM.
Graham Leggat won the first
of his 18 Scotland caps against
England in April 1956. Leggat
joined Fulham from Aberdeen in
August 1958 for a fee of £20,000.
Very fast and extremely brave,
Leggat scored in his first six
matches for the Club, eventually
helping Fulham into the top flight
with 21 goals. He hit eight hat-
tricks for Fulham in all, scored 23
goals in 1960/61 and the following
season helped the Club reach the
Semi-Final of the FA Cup. Leggat
scored a hat-trick in three minutes
during the 10-1 demolition of
Ipswich Town on Boxing Day 1963.
L
IMITED COMPANY.
Fulham became a limited
company with a share of capital
of £7,500 in May 1903. The Club
had been unable to move up to
Division One of the Southern
League as they had lost to
Brentford 7-2 in a test match
after finishing the season as
Division Two champions. The
Southern League committee
informed them that if they could
raise a first-class team by 30th
May 1903 then promotion would
be guaranteed. To enable the
Club to finance the obtaining of
better quality players, Fulham
had to raise capital, thus they
became a limited company. The
most famous player to be signed
was goalkeeper Jack Fryer
who had played in the 1903 FA
Cup Final for Derby County.
New players came mainly
from Football League clubs.
These included established
professionals such as Harry
Fletcher and Peter Gray from
Grimsby Town, Jock Hamilton
from Bristol City, Fergus Hunt
from Woolwich Arsenal and
Billy Orr from Manchester City.
L
ONDON CHALLENGE CUP.
Fulham competed in the
London Challenge Cup from
1908-1973. By the late 1920s it
had started to lose its shine. In
1931 it became a competition
for London reserve and leading
amateur sides. These matches
were usually played on a Monday
on autumn or winter afternoons.
Our first opponents in the
competition were Woolwich
Arsenal who visited the Cottage
in late September 1908 and won
1-0 before a 7,000 crowd. Fulham
won the cup in 1909/10 when
they beat Tottenham Hotspur
4-1 in the Final at Stamford
Bridge. Fulham lost 2-1 to Spurs
in the following season’s Final
at Chelsea. Fulham had to wait
until 1931/32 before winning
the London Challenge Cup again
when the reserves beat Crystal
Palace 2-1 in the Final. Fulham
lost 3-1 to Spurs’ reserves in the
1947/48 Final and were beaten
by Brentford in the Final in
1966/67. Fulham’s final match in
the competition was a 1-0 home
defeat against non-League Hayes
in October 1973.
