he tie rests on team selection. It might be
the case, given recent injuries and the
long trip to Ghana for two stars, that the
Reds start with more British players again, just
as they did in December's match. Jürgen Klopp
will also bear in mind the big Premier League
game coming up against Manchester City.
But if both teams want to rest players,
Liverpool should have an advantage there:
they are more capable of rotation than
Everton. It's a cup tie, though, and a derby on
top of that. You don't see so many blood-and-
guts games these days but this is bound to be
intense and passionate. Again the onus could
be on Liverpool to break Everton down.
The new-manager effect, for want of a
better expression, has given everyone at
Goodison a lift with Sam Allardyce having a
fantastic start as boss, but reality has set in
a little bit in the last few weeks. The Blues are
solid at the back but they've struggled to find
someone to score goals.
Regarding Virgil van Dijk's move to Anfield,
he's a quality player and any time you can
sign a player like that you've got to take the
chance. It's not about the money, it's about
ambition. I'd be surprised if he starts this
evening, maybe he'll be on the bench. He
hasn't had an awful lot of football; having just
come back from injury and not had full pre-
season, he might be a little 'undercooked'.
We should look to the end of the season, if
not he start of the next, to see him at his best.
