ifty-one-and-a-bit years
ago the FA Cup wasn't the
only major trophy in the
hearts and minds of Merseyside
football fans. Joining it on show
at Goodison Park in 1966 were
the old League Championship
and the Jules Rimet trophy.
Everton were the FA Cup
holders and Liverpool were the
league champions – hence the
occasion, the FA Charity Shield
- while England had just won the
World Cup. Reds striker Roger
Hunt and Blues defender Ray
Wilson, both members of the
national team, paraded the Jules
Rimet, followed by Ron Yeats
with the title trophy and Brian
Labone with the FA Cup. Wilson
and Hunt along with Gerry
Byrne and Ian Callaghan (also
in the England squad) received
a silver tankard from the Mayor
of Liverpool, while a single was
released to commemorate the
achievements of the city's two
teams: Roarin’ and Scorin', by
The Konda Group, was a
mash-up of surf-sound and
Merseybeat to the tune of
The Beach Boy's Barbara Ann.
