125 GREAT
LIVERPOOL GOALS PART SIXTEEN: 1956-59
69 JOHNNY WHEELER
V PORT VALE
3 NOVEMBER 1956
Right-sided midfielder
Johnny, just signed from
Bolton, scored a late
hat-trick with the score
1-1 with ten minutes left.
His first was described
by the Echo as a
“tremendous drive out
of the blue” and the
second was from close-
range. He completed his
treble with a powerful
header and later said:
“It came from a corner-
kick from Alan A'Court
whom many people
said had his best game
for Liverpool. All goals
are good goals but I
got a lot of satisfaction
from this one. The ball
entered the net just
under the goal angle
[of bar and post], one
of the worst places
from a goalkeeper's
point-of-view.”
