Cruise ships are getting bigger (and better) every year,
so the clever crew at Carnival has created a wearable
device to help guests navigate the multitude of decks and
different entertainment spaces with ease. The revamp of its
Regal Princess involved an ambitious new customisation
platform: some 7,000 onboard sensors and 4,000 guest
portals (door-access panels and touchscreen TVs), all of
them connected by 120 kilometres of internal cabling. The
platform will provide a new level of service for passengers;
the onboard sensors record their tastes and respond to
their movements, and the app guides them around the ship
and towards activities aligned with their preferences.
Carnival plans to roll out the platform to another seven
ships by January 2019.
