COOL WEATHER HIT THAILAND’S
northeast the morning of The North Face 100 in
Nakhon Ratchasima’s Pak Chong district. A total
of 2,700 athletes from 50 countries competed
across five distances – 15km, 25km, 50km, 75km
and 100km – on a hilly course in the surrounds
of Khao Yai National Park.
Thailand’s two-time winner Sanya Khanchai
made the early running at the 100-km distance
but was overtaken by America’s David Emch
who set a blistering pace over the remainder of
the course. Britain’s Kristian Morgan returned
determined to beat his third place from last
year, and over the second 50-km loop, took time
out of the leaders, ultimately finishing second,
less than two minutes behind Emch. Vietnam’s
Quang Tran rounded out the male podium with
Khanchai having to settle for fourth.
France’s Carole Fuchs led from start to
finish to dominate a women’s field, and smashed
the course record by more than 40 minutes,
finishing in a time of 10 hours 21 minutes 58
seconds. Almost two hours back was Thailand’s
new talent Wipawee Pratumsuwan who was
racing her first ever 100-km ultra. Japan’s
Kazumi Kawamoto finished third.
In the men’s 75-km race, Czech Republic’s
Petr Novotny (shown below) was running
second to Philippine’s Edgar Uruganan in the
early stages, but after Split Two he found an extra
gear to take the lead and crossed the line first in
7 hours 43 minutes 6 seconds. Japan’s Keisuke
Endo was second with Edgar Puruganan third.
Having won the 50-km in 2015 and 2016,
and stepping up to win the 75-km in 2017,
Japan’s Naomi Imaizumi was back to defend
her title and did so with a finish time of 8 hours
17 minutes 29 seconds, two hours ahead of
Thailand’s Kanokkorn Vitesakan and America’s
Kristi Wollbrink in third.
