themostfromasmalltake-off.You’llhavetoreallypulluphardonthefrontof
thebikeandtimepickinguptherearatjusttherightmoment.Keepingthefront
wheelslightlyhighforlandingcanhelplessenanyimpact.Askafriendtomark
where your rear wheel lands, then there is a clear goal between attempts.
BACK HOP

What:Riseupontotherearwheelandhop,withoutthefronttouchingtheground.
How:Theeasiestwaytostartabackhopistocometoastoppitchingyourbody
weight forwards into a slight endo, and rock backwards bringing your weight
overthebackwheelwhilepickingupthefrontwheel.Keepyourbackbrakeon
andthenit’sacaseofcompressingtherearwheelintothegroundandusing
thattobounceofffrom.Again,smallcontrolledhopsarebetterthanbigout-of-
control movements. Count how many times you can hop on the back wheel.

What:Rollingbackwards,andturningoutofitif
you can.
How:Look for either flat ground with a slight ramp at
oneend,oragentleuphillslope.Rideatitandstopat
the top of the ramp or slope while shifting your weight
forwardonthebike,thenleanbackasyoucomeoffthe
brakes to start rolling backwards. You’ll have to pedal
the bike backwards because of the freewheel, and your
balanceisbestaidedbyturningthefrontwheel.Once
youinitiateaturnit’snotactuallytoohardtohopthe
frontwheelroundandrideoutforwards.Thegoalisto
ride backwards as far as you can, and even better, turn
back to facing forwards.
