CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S LETTER

here has been much in
the press this summer
about the amount
of plastic in our oceans and it is
estimated that it takes the
planet about a year and a half to
regenerate the natural
resources that humans use
in a year. We all have
a responsibility to look after our
planet and, on p19, Simon Evans
reminds us that we also have
a responsibility to look after
ourselves and each other.
I am a passionate believer
in giving something back.
I support the Royal Navy and
Royal Marines Charity
in recognition of the positive
infl uence the Royal Navy
has had on my life, and Saga
has two charities that are close
to its heart.
The Saga Charitable Trust
was formed in 1985 by
the chairman at the time,
Sir Roger De Haan, to
help communities in developing
countries. It supports projects
that teach skills and deliver
health and welfare benefi ts
in areas that are visited
by our cruise passengers and
holiday customers.
Successes include the
construction of water-treatment
plants in the Peruvian Amazon,
which provide clean drinking
water for 5,000; the set-up of
a mobile street clinic in Kolkata,
India, which now treats more
than 1,100 patients a month in
12 slum communities; and the
funding of HIV/Aids awareness
training in Malawi, which

Giving something back
Saga supports two charities that really
make a difference to people’s lives

in one month reached
more than 9,000 people.
The Trust has recently
agreed to fund an IT laboratory
in Zimbabwe. The grant will
provide a secondary school with
30 computers and licences,
which should have a positive
impact on the future job
prospects of its 320 students.
It is also funding a one-year
healthcare outreach
programme on Tonlé Sap Lake,
Cambodia, to provide
comprehensive health checks
for 2,000 pupils of six
fl oating schools, many of whom
lack access to even the most
basic healthcare.
In 2016, we decided to extend
our charitable giving to
a national charity. Having
sought the opinion of Saga
customers and employees, we
selected The Silver Line
as the charity that was the best
fi t with our ethos. Since
the start of our partnership, we
have provided £423,
of support, which has helped to
offer information, advice
and regular friendship calls
to those who contact The
Silver Line.
I would like to thank our
customers and readers for your
generosity in supporting our
chosen charities. Thanks, too, to

our employees – for signing
up to be Silver Line Friends; for
raising money for both of
our charities over the years; and
for all they do to support
the communities in which our
offi ces are based. Thank you for
helping us give a little bit back.
