G

oogle’s parent Alphabet’s ambition to build high-altitude balloons
that deliver internet connections to rural or disaster-stricken areas
under its unit Loon is driven as much by philanthropy as by an eye
on business. It’s no secret that enhanced internet connectivity would
lead to more searches and business for Google.

Toms Shoes Inc. has become an internationally recognised brand by being a
mission-driven organisation. When Toms sells a pair of shoes, a new pair is
given to an impoverished child. Similarly, when the company sells eyewear,
part of the profit is used to save or restore eyesight for people in developing
countries. The company was valued at over $600mn in 2014, when Bain
Capital took a 50 per cent share.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has the potential to help businesses and
society if companies can make it a core part of their strategy and culture.
Irrespective of its scale and scope, CSR is a three-part process comprising
policy, plan and implementation. The success of transformational CSR
requires strategic formulation and managerial acumen, which corporates are
naturally adept at. CSR should be a win-win proposition for both business
and social development to be sustainable in the long run. Our cover story
illustrates how a cross section of companies in Oman are achieving this fine
balance.
