LETTER FROM

THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

WHAT IS DESIGN IF NOT A MANIFESTATION
of the many shades and shapes of beauty? As Japanese fashion
designer Issey Miyake said, “Design is not for philosophy, it is for
life.” There is that murmur of design that flows through almost
every aspect of our life and has the power to awe, excite, and turn
previously held opinion about an object or space on its head. In
this issue, India Today Spice embarks on a journey to highlight
ideas, even people who have changed our spatial and intellectual
relationship with this world.
Our cover story looks at design’s many avatars. In it, we
chronicle the journey of a brand that is the poster child for all
things global desi. Think Good Earth and chances are your
head will be full of images of strong lines, colours, motifs deeply
embedded in our culture, and a distinct sensibility that many have
tried replicating, often unsuccessfully. When Anita Lal founded the
company in 1996 she worked on instinct, and today, that risk has
more than paid off, making Good Earth one of the most sought
after and profitable luxury home décor brands in the country.
Going beyond brands, we also have a chef who throws plates in
disarray with his idea of food design; an interior designer who picks
his top hotels that sport design which is out-of-the-box and hip;
and a fashion designer who breaks rules and creates garments that
are futuristic in form and fabric.
Keen on skimming the surface of design concepts and ideas that
are novel this year? We tell you what’s trending across the board and
what gets us to sit up and take notice.
Jewellery brand Bulgari is all about creating things that are big
and beautiful and their Wild Pop high jewellery collection which
was unveiled in Rome last month, pays tribute to the ingenuity of
artist Andy Warhol. In an interview with Spice, the brand’s creative
director decodes the inspiration for the collection which draws on
the extravagance and wild spirit of the 80s.
Design has the power to bore or bait and there’s no one way
to look at it. Shape your thoughts, drink in beauty, be provoked by
ugliness and be dismissive about the sameness of copycats as your
traverse the world of creative instincts in this issue of the magazine.
