stand as they were published in theDictionary.We have also pulled from
theDictionarythe alphabetical entries on Philo and Josephus. Together, we
believe, these essays provide a comprehensive and authoritative overview
of Judaism in the Hellenistic and early Roman periods.
Since some of the essays have been coauthored, we would like to indi-
cate the division of labor. In the essay “Jewish History from Alexander to
Hadrian,” Chris Seeman wrote the section “From Alexander to Pompey”
and Adam Marshak the section “From Pompey to Hadrian.” In the essay
on Philo, Greg Sterling write the “Overview” and “Achievement” sections;
David Runia, the section onQuestions and Answers on Genesis and Exodus;
Maren Niehoff, the sections on theAllegorical CommentaryandExposition
of the Law;and Annewies van den Hoek, the section on “Apologetic Trea-
tises.” In the essay on Josephus, Steve Mason wrote the following sections:
the introduction,Vita, Jewish Antiquities,and “New Approaches”; James
McLaren write the section on theJewish War,and John Barclay, the one on
Against Apion.It is our hope that it will serve the interests of both students
and scholars.
