The village’s most important shaman, Chaitong, is addicted to opium. It is legal
for him to grow enough to meet his needs—about 10 pipes a day. He cuts the raw
opium with aspirin and heats it in a tin spoon over an open flame. He then puts it
into the pipe to smoke.
