Although the PRC made every attempt to stamp out the large clans in China, they have survived in many
Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. This is the richly ornamented clanhouse for descendants of the
Khoo clan, wealthy seventeenth-century Chinese traders. The clanhouse was built in 1851 and rebuilt in
1906 when the Khoos were at their peak of wealth and influence (see pp. 276–285).
