Ise Shrine and Horyuji Temple. The simplicity of the Grand Shrine of Ise [top] masks its imperial
significance as the central state Shinto shrine. It is built on the model of a Yayoi grain store-
house; every 20 years, with elaborate ceremonies involving the emperor, it is rebuilt on the adja-
cent empty compound. The last rebuilding was in 2013. In contrast to the simple architecture of
the Ise Shrine, the Horyuji Temple was built by Prince Shotoku in the Chinese style, although
Japanese adaptations can be seen in it already.
