(Nancy Kaufman) #1

226 Chapter 9

Randiancapitalismis socialDarwinism,the Naziideologycannotbe socialDarwinism.
Theconverseis alsotrue—inasmuchas the Naziideologycountsas socialDarwinism,
RandianObjectivismcannotbe that.
Yet, despitesuchconsiderations, somegovernistsinterject,“Not so fast!” Theytell me
that it is unfairto classifyNazisas mysticswhoconsistentlyrefusedto exercisethe faculty
for practicalreasons.Thesegovernistinterlocutorsof mineinsist,for instance,thatthe
Nazisdid put theirphronesisintoplayto managethe Germaneconomysuccessfully—
muchmoresuccessfullythandid the InventivePeriod’s marketeconomyor the Soviet
Union’s centralplanners.Thatclaimmustnot go unchallenged.Alsoto be subjectedto
scrutinyis the veryideathat thereis any legitimacyin criticizinganyonefor beinga social
Darwinist,whateverthat is.
