ism and trenchant critique of what he considered the delusions of German Jews
who denationalized their Judaism and identified with the German people were
wholly out of step with mainstream German-Jewish sensibilities and more than
Auerbach could countenance. In the late 1830 s and 1840 s both friends set out
with Spinoza to try to reimagine the polity and the nature of community, but the
paths down which they followed Spinoza led in radically different directions.
