Checkyour password
security in Chrome
Anewflag(experimentalfeature)has
been addedtothe Canarydeveloper
version ofChrome (bit.ly/canary4 84 )
thatautomatically checkstosee
whether any passwordsyou enter have
beeninvolvedina dataleak.
We’ve covered extensionsthatdothis
job before, but thisnewflagoffersthe
functiondirectlyinthe browser. Any
timeyou use apassword,Chrome’s
super-experimentalbrowser will double-
check it against alist of compromised
passwordsheldbyGoogle. You’ll then
either begiven the all clear or Chrome
will suggestthatyou try asafer
password.It’s not imperativethatyou
dothis, but it’s recommended.This
handynewmonitoring systemisonly
availableinCanary,but we expect to
see thisreach the stableversion of
Chromeatsome point.

the drop-down menu, switchthe flagto

Tab management isalwaysa hassle. You open
multiple tabsfor work, thenyou needa separate
browser windowtohavemultiple tabsopenfor fun
sites.And thenanotherfor thatholiday you’re
planning.It can quickly become overwhelming.
There are lotsoftab managersout there –
andwe’ve covered several onthese verypages–
but mostsuchextensionstendtogroup tabs into
sections along the browser ribbon. Thismeans that
while they’re useful, it can stillbetrickytofind
preciselywhatyou wantamongthe clutter.
Toast (bit.ly/toast 484 ) iseasily the besttab
manager we’ve comeacross. With the extension
installed,openyourmanytabs, thenclickthe Toast
toolbar buttontoname and savethemasa group.
You can thenopenmore tabsorrestore older saves
with one click.

Keep track of important
dates
Got aspecial event comingup–
a holiday,birthday orthat
anniversaryyou swore you wouldn’t
forget(notafter lasttime!)? Instead
ofsetting aphone reminderthat
you’ll probablyforgettocheck,
install DaysUntil(Days Countdown)
(bit.ly/
days 484 ).
This
extension
counts
downtoa
specified
dateright
inside
your
browser,
soyou’ve
got no
excusetoforgetthe event and have
plenty ofwarning tobuild uptoit.
Install the browser tool, thenclick
its toolbar button. You’reprompted
toadda date, eitherbytyping it or
via the drop-down calendar menu.
Handily,you can movebetween day,
monthandyearusing both the Tab
keyandthe arrowkeys –something
most online calendars let you do.
Whenyou’veset the date, clickSave.
The extension nowdisplaysthe
numberofdaysuntilthe big day.

Enabled.Restart the browser when
prompted,thenyou’reset.

Chrome improvesthe tab
right-click menu
In anotherCanary exclusive,Googlehas
introduced significantchanges tothe
tab context menu– the menuyou see
whenright-clicking tabs. The multiple
‘closetab’options are gone, replaced
with asingleClose, andyou nolonger
sendspecifictabsto yourdeviceand
openbookmarksvia aright-click. Inthe
newversion,these haveeithervanished
altogether, orcan be accessedby
right-clicking the browser bar. By
trimmingthe fat, Canary leaves only the
optiontoReload, Duplicate,Pin,Focus
andMuteSite.
Aseverwith anexperimentalbrowser,
thischange may never beimplemented
beyondCanary but it’s veryuseful, so
wefancyits chances.
