Buyers of all budgets are likely
to find something that suits them
in Puglia. Small country homes
needing restoration start at an
astonishingly low €30,000 – but
are likely to require more than
this amount to restore them, of
course. Simple, modern-built
two-bedroom villas get going at
about €70,000, and three-beds at
about €100,000. Modern-built
two-bedroom apartments in seaside
locations start at about €100,000,
as do old rural houses with land. For
€250,000 you might choose from a
seaside villa, a three-bedroom home
with a pool near a fashionable old
town, or a nice old country house.
Upward from here, properties
obviously get progressively larger
or more luxurious. Puglia’s stately
farmhouse-mansions (masserie) start
at about €400,000, and go upward
from here into the millions.
KNOW YOUR WAY ROUND
As you’d expect, property prices
vary across different parts of Puglia,
reflecting the general appeal and
popularity of the area. For foreign
buyers, the least popular section of
the region is its northwestern half
- say, from Bari upwards. Northern
Puglia (the area around Foggia) has
a relatively flat and ‘uninteresting’
landscape, although the ankle-spur
of the Gargano Promontory is a
wonderful, unspoilt area of dramatic
highlands and glorious coast, all
protected as National Parkland.
South and east of Bari, the lower
half of Puglia forms the Salento
Peninsula – the actual high heel
sticking out from the bottom of
Italy’s boot. This is the area that
has seduced foreign buyers for the
past dozen years. Initial interest
centred on the lovely Itria Valley
countryside, with its abundant cone-
topped trullo dwellings, and on the
Upper Salento area in general. But
then eyes turned further south, to
the cliffy seaside delights of Lower
Salento and the very bottom parts
of the peninsula. Today, both Upper
and Lower Salento remain justifiably
popular with overseas buyers.
Francesco Lamberta of Secret
Puglia outlines Puglia’s current
property hotspots. He says, “The
