Rally for Uyghurs Held Outside
White House
On July 24, supporters of Uyghurs and
other Turkic peoples in East Turkestan ral-
lied outside the White House, calling atten-
tion to the Chinese government’s inhumane
treatment of the estimated half-million pre-
dominantly Muslim Uyghurs, Kazakhs and
Kyrgyz who are interned in barbed wire en-
closed camps to undergo what Beijing de-
scribes as “transformation through educa-
tion.” The prisoners are forbidden to prac-
tice their religion, including praying, fasting
and the reading of Islamic religious texts.
Located on the ancient Silk Road, East
Turkestan, the Uyghurs’ ancient homeland
in China’s western district of Xinjiang, has
been occupied by China since 1949. Cul-
turally, linguistically and religiously, Uyghurs
are more aligned with Turks than the Chi-
nese. In many communities in East
Turkestan, however, local authorities re-
quire the ethnic minorities to pledge loyalty
to the Chinese Communist Party.
Members of the East Turkistan National
Awakening Movement (ETNAM), the rally
organizer, passed out informational flyers to
passersby and urged them to contact con-
gressional representatives and political, so-
cial, and religious organizations and urge
them to speak out against the brutal, dis-
criminatory treatment of the Uyghurs and
other ethnic minorities by Chinese authori-
ties. The ETNAM is an international organi-
zation seeking to restore the independence
of the Uyghur people. —Elaine Pasquini
