Injury crisis among fast bowlers will
only get worse unless mad schedule
with uneven workloads is addressed
E
ngland’s Test team are dealing
with an extraordinary injury
crisis among their fast bowl-
ers. Surely never since central
contracts were introduced in
2000 with the express pur-
pose of protecting the top
players from overwork have
eight bowlers been unavailable, many
with long-lasting problems that will
keep them sidelined for months.
Many factors are at play, and no
two cases are quite the same, but this
has happened in large part because of
a brutal schedule and the way short-
format cricket monopolises the calen-
dar. The sport is no longer seasonal
and those who put their bodies
through the greatest physical exer-

tion, and need rest and recuperation
the most, are the ones paying the
price.
Playing during the pandemic has
put a number of cricketers and back-
room staff under enormous mental
strain, with distressing consequences
in some instances, but they have been
driven to physical breaking point as
well. In the past week alone three
England bowlers — including Jofra
Archer, arguably English cricket’s
most prized asset — had stress frac-
tures of the back diagnosed, but more
will surely follow.
From June 2, England embark on 22
Tests, ODIs and T20s in the space of 15
weeks, having already fulfilled 72 fix-
tures, more than any other team,
since the start of the pandemic.
This month, after his appointment
as Test captain, Ben Stokes
denounced a schedule that made
“ridiculous” demands of players, say-
ing: “It really needs looking at from a
workload point of view.” Yet it is only
set to get worse. Next winter, there

will be times when two England teams
will be deployed on different conti-
nents at the same time. Some of these
commitments are rearranged white-
ball tours to South Africa and Bangla-
desh that were either abandoned or
postponed as a result of Covid-19 as
the sport desperately plays catch-up.
Tom Harrison, the outgoing ECB
chief executive, acknowledged last
year that the demands on players
were a concern, saying “administra-
tors have to keep listening and make
sure we’re taking action against put-
ting too much pressure on players”.
Yet such sentiments appear to count
for little as the board, which last week
announced an annual turnover of
£303 million, up £96 million on the
previous year, focuses on keeping
stakeholders happy and recovering
the losses suffered during lockdown.
The full consequences of T20
evolving into the driving force of the
modern game are being realised only
gradually, but one of the most pro-
found is that it has ended the concept
of an off-season.
