Rich List 2022 Billionaires

grew revenues post-lockdown. With turnover flat across the year at
£2.8 billion we continue to value Bet365 at £7.1 billion. The family
own 93.3 per cent of the online operation forged from betting shops
built by Coates’s father, Peter, 85. Her brother, John, 52, is jointly in
charge. They should have bagged most of the dividends paid by
Bet365 — £97.5 million in 2020-21. Coates has built a £90 million
glass mansion in Cheshire. Her family again top The Sunday Times
Tax List, paying £481.7 million. 2021: £8.448bn, 17

Shipping and oil services

Soon after the invasion of Ukraine one of Fredriksen’s Frontline
tankers sailed into the Russian port of Novorossiysk to pick up an
oil shipment — within missile range of the front line. London-based
Fredriksen, 78, was once fined for putting sailors at risk in the
Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s. As well as his freight company the world’s
richest Norwegian owns Mowi, a huge seafood producer that farms
salmon in Scottish waters. His twin daughters, Kathrine and Cecilie,
38, work with him. Cecilie revealed last year that David Ross, a
co-founder of Carphone Warehouse, is the father of her two-year-old
son, named John. The family own the Old Rectory, a Chelsea
mansion once valued at £200 million. 2021: £7.831bn, 19

19 MIKHAIL FRIDMAN
£8.222bn £2.575bn ▼
Industry: Alfa Group and Letter One

Fridman, 58, was left unable to pay a £200 doctor’s bill in March
as one of London’s first oligarchs to be hit with European Union
sanctions. The Ukraine-born financier is contesting the asset freeze
and EU claims that he is an “enabler” of Vladimir Putin’s inner circle,
telling The Sunday Times in March: “Russia must stop the war.”
Fridman co-owns London-based LetterOne and Alfa Group with
German Khan and Alexei Kuzmichev (both qv). LetterOne owns
the health food retailer Holland & Barrett while Alfa Group oversees
X5, Russia’s biggest food retailer, and Alfa-Bank. Our valuation
does not deduct frozen assets, which include Athlone House in
Hampstead, north London, bought for £65 million in 2016.
2021: £10.797bn, 11

20 MOSHE KANTOR
£8bn £4.478bn ▲
Chemicals: Acron

Kantor, 68, was sanctioned last month. Born in Moscow, the fertiliser
mogul lives in London and has British, Russian and Israeli citizenship.
As president of the European Jewish Congress since 2007 he has
brought delegations to meet Putin over fears of rising antisemitism
in Europe. The former aerospace scientist was one of those who
made billions snapping up Soviet state assets. He owns 85 per cent
of the chemicals group Acron and controls the logistics firm DBT. He
also collects art. His charitable foundations are under investigation.
We correct our previous underestimate of his wealth — although
some is frozen. 2021: £3.522bn, 48

Fashion: Bestseller and Asos

Holch Povlsen, 49, is now Scotland’s largest landowner with more
than 220,000 acres and wants to rewild much of it. He is sole owner
of the Danish fashion retailer Bestseller, where profits leapt to
£510 million in 2020-21. That offsets a poor year for Asos, the
retailer a quarter-owned by Holch Povlsen. A 75 per cent share crash
knocked £1.058 billion off his stake, now worth £365 million. He has
given more than £11 million to Ukrainian refugees. 2021: £6bn, 28=
