IN MY QUEST for flight-free European
adventures, I’d homed in on Guernsey:
just under 100 miles south of mainland
Britain, it’s reachable by a three-hour ferry
from Poole and is diminutive enough for
circumnavigating in a few days, but with
a wild and rugged coastline that’s steep
enough to wake up your calf muscles.
I had enlisted the companionship of a
fellow flight-free travel enthusiast, Isobel,
and together we set out on a three-day
walking holiday which, while not quite
encompassing the whole circumference of
the island, would take in what we hoped
would be the most scenic parts.
Visit Guernsey has handily produced
a series of self-guided ‘Tasty Walks’ which
combine the island’s two best features: food
and scenery. Our trip would link several of
these routes together.

“So, where do we start?” I asked at
the tourist information desk.
“You see those trees? Just head for them
and keep on walking. So long as you keep
the sea on your left you won't get lost...”
