started with a small drill bit in
the centre, and then progressed
to bigger sizes. This way I had
more control and was less likely
to damage the plastic parts.
I painted the exhausts Tamiya
XF-84 Dark Iron, followed by a
dry brush of Citadel Ryza Rust
paint on the corners and outer
exposed areas. I found that this
looked too bright and needed to be
dimmed down, so I dry-brushed
XF-52 Flat Earth and XF-10 Flat
Brown before attaching the
completed exhaust to the engine.
Finally I gave the entire model
a flat coat to blend everything
in and I was finished.CONCLUSION
Personally, I think the options for this
kit are a bit boring, as four of the five
options are RAF silver-doped Ninaks.
Not that this is a bad thing, but they
are all very similar to each other. This
was rubbed in, as on Page 21 of the
instructions there is a very unique-
looking Ninak – silver dope finish,
painted wing tips, and a Star of David
on the tail and wing top. I do wish this
option had been included in the kit.
Thinking back on the entire
building process, I’ve got to say that
I really can’t find any faults with the
kit itself. It’s brilliantly engineered;
I don’t think I had any big fit issues
that weren’t caused by my own
error. I had a lot of fun trying to
recreate a more distressed and used
aircraft than I normally model.
While the kit is quite simple, it
becomes a very complicated-looking
model with all of its great featuresand small details. If you are looking
for a start into Wingnut Wings kits,
I’d honestly say this might be the
kit for you. It’s a beautiful looking
aircraft, and I really enjoy looking
at in on the shelf when I pass it by.
Again, I’d like to mention to anyone
who’s getting into WWI aviation
to visit wingnutwings.com and
look through their tips section.
I thank Wingnut Wings for
supplying the kit for me to build.
It can be ordered from Wingnuts
stockists around the world, including
