- A Su-27UBM1 (Bort 70) operated
by the Ukrainian Air Force crashed
on October 16 during a training
sortie as part of Exercise ‘Clear Sky
2018’. The ghter came down near
the village of Ulaniv, around 185
miles south-west of Kiev. The two-
man crew — a Ukrainian Air Force
pilot and a US Air National Guard
pilot — were both killed. - An F-22A operated by the US
Air Force’s 3rd Wing was damaged
in an emergency landing at Joint
Base Elmendorf-Richardson on
October 11. The landing followed an
apparent landing gear malfunction.
The pilot egressed the Raptor on the
ground and was not injured. - Two pilots aboard an L-39ZAM
operated by the Slovak Air Force’s
2nd Squadron ejected safely before
the Albatros crashed on October 10.
The trainer went down around 1.2
miles (2km) from Sliač air base. - T-6C serial NZ1402 was damaged
in a gear-up landing that occurred
at Ōhakea air base, Manawatū, New
Zealand, on October 9. The Texan II,
which is assigned to the Royal New
Zealand Air Force’s No 14 Squadron,
reportedly su ered a mechanical
failure during a night training
mission. Neither pilot was injured. - Both pilots aboard a MiG-29UB
operated by the Russian Aerospace
Force’s Gromov Flight Research
Institute ejected safely before the
ghter crashed in a forest near
Moscow on October 5. The crew
was conducting a training ight
at the time. - DA40CS serial FAB-527 (c/n
40.802) operated by the Bolivian Air
Force’s Squadron 211 crashed in the
town of Bulo Bulo in Cochabamba
following an apparent engine
failure on October 4. Three crew
and passengers were injured in
the mishap, which occurred in
central Bolivia. - Two Antonov transports operated
by the Sudanese Air Force were
destroyed in a ground collision
that occurred on the runway at
Khartoum Airport on October 3. The
mishap involved examples of the
An-26 and An-32 and apparently
occurred during landing when
BELGIAN F-16 DESTROYED BY ‘FRIENDLY FIRE’
F16AM SERIAL FA128 assigned
to the 2nd Tactical Wing of the
Belgian Air Component was
destroyed by a re and apparent
explosion, and another was
damaged, in a ground incident
at Florennes air base, Belgium
on October 11. The incident
occurred while an F-16 was
undergoing maintenance on
its 20mm Vulcan cannon in
an adjacent shelter, when the
weapon inadvertently went
live. The weapon had rounds
chambered and some of these
struck two other F-16s located
across the ramp.

Six crew and passengers su ered
minor injuries.
- An unidenti ed helicopter
operated by the Afghan National
Army crashed in the in Koh-e-Sa
district of central Parwan province
on September 29. Eight crew and
passengers aboard the aircraft
were killed in the mishap, which
occurred around 31 miles (50km)
north of Kabul. - Just one day after US Marine
Corps F-35Bs ew their debut
combat missions, the service
su ered the rst crash of one its
Lightning IIs on September 28. The
F-35B, which had been assigned
to Marine Fighter Attack Training
Squadron (VMFAT) 501 ‘Warlords’,
went down near Beaufort, South
Carolina on September 28 around
ve miles (8km) west of MCAS
Beaufort. The pilot ejected safely
before the aircraft crashed on Little
Barnwell Island. All three variants of
the F-35 were temporarily grounded
for inspections on October 11 after
it was determined that the crash
may have been caused by a faulty
fuel tube.
- One pilot was killed when two
F-7Ni ghters operated by the
Nigerian Air Force collided in mid-air
on September 28. The second pilot
ejected safely following the collision,
which occurred in Katampe,
near Abuja. - Both crew ejected safely from a
Russian Aerospace Force MiG-31BM
before the ghter crashed on
September 19. The ghter went
down near Kulebaki in the Nizhny
Novgorod region around 10.6 miles
(17km) from Savasleyka air base,
shortly after take-o.

damaged the helicopter. - A AC-208 Combat Caravan
operated by the Iraqi Air Force was
heavily damaged in an emergency
landing in the desert on September
- The mishap occurred in the
Kurdistan region near Kalar city
around 62 miles (100km) south-east
