strategy required for effective conservation of such
island systems must be tailored to meet the particular
features of island environments and their human
societies, and the particular factors that threaten
their environments and their biodiversity (sea-
level rise, exotic predators, exotic grazers, mining,
over-fishing, over-hunting, habitat degradation,
etc.). To be successful, conservation actions must
ultimately be part of broader management for the
sustainable development of island ecosystems. It is
stressed that it is crucial to enlist political and
legislative support, and to build educational pro-
grammes to engender the interest and support of
island peoples.
