can expand your concepts of what constitutes knowledge and reality. As doctorally pre-
pared nurse scholars (whether in direct practice roles or not) you will have the skills of
generating nursing knowledge from practice, and mindful, reflective awareness will
enable you to achieve excellence in your own professional nursing performance. This
approach honors your patients, yourself and your profession. Do you not owe it to your
patients, yourselves, and your profession?
■ CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS
- Identify a situation or incident in your recent clinical experience that was significant, pow-
erful, or memorable in some way (either positively or negatively). Tell the story briefly,
either in writing or verbally within your group. What happened? (What?) - What were you thinking and feeling? Why did you act or not act as you did?
- What was good and bad about the experience?
- What factors influenced your decisions and actions?
- What sense can you make of the situation? (So what?)
- What else could you have done, and what would have been the result?
- How has your practice changed as a result of this experience?
- If a similar situation arises again, what will you do? (Now what?)
- What have you learned from this experience?
- How can you share this learning with others? Is it nursing knowledge?
