20: REFLECTIVE RESPONSE ■ 465
across doctoral programs. These collaborations in theory development have led to plans
for future research projects, coupling the ideas shared in the books with extension and
replication studies.
I introduce global nursing leadership in the introductory nursing leadership
course in the CWRU DNP program. Though many of the students have not initially
considered themselves leaders beyond their current positions, they express a commit-
ment to embark on leadership paths at a national and global level, through opportuni-
ties presented at ICN and the United Nations. There are currently plans underway to
formalize global nursing leadership opportunities as part of the doctoral program.
In contrast to the Drexel University process for supporting the study- abroad pro-
grams, all CWRU students who select to go abroad fund their own experiences directly.
However, it is acknowledged that this limits the opportunities to only those who have
resources readily available because it is an elective experience, this mirrors the model
that is used at CWRU for the undergraduate nursing students who choose to do their
community health experience abroad.
There is no better experience than learning about a country or culture than that
of experiencing it firsthand. Although all of the study- abroad experiences described
here and in Chapter 20 are short term, even the small periods of exposure can change
perceptions and perspectives. The Chinese proverb is indeed relevant: “A journey of a
thousand miles begins with the first step.” Through global educational experiences, we
are taking the first steps toward an understanding of the global health among the future
nurse leaders.
