to the greater good of society can grow through your potential role as a nurse. The
beauty of returning to academic studies is that you are exposed not only to new
knowledge from the courses you are enrolled in, but you are also exposed to others
within nursing and outside of nursing. This can expand your network for future
opportunities directly and indirectly. Perhaps directly by being offered an employ-
ment opportunity by someone you have met along this journey, or indirectly by
exposing you to new types of employment opportunities that you would have never
considered before.
As shown in Table 22.2 , I have created “tips for success” that are developed from
my 35 years of integrated experiences as a practicing NP and educator.
Embarking on journeys for new academic degrees that resulted in new roles has
always further strengthened my love and devotion to the discipline of nursing. Little
did I know about the actual roles I would eventually assume at the completion of my
first academic degree; however, I successfully found roles I did not imagine before.
These new roles, enabled by my newly acquired academic degrees, provided me with
immensely satisfying professional opportunities and growth. Remember that what is
good for the people is good for nursing. Thus, my advice to those considering embark-
ing on a journey for a practice doctorate is to take a leap of faith with an open mind and
enjoy the doctoral journey.
