- A Mi-17 operated by the Afghan
National Army conducted an
emergency landing in southern
Helmand province on May 12. The
helicopter, which was supporting a
security operation in the Yakhchal
area of Greshk district at the time,
was subsequently destroyed by Iraqi
forces as a security measure. - Both crew aboard a Russian Air
and Space Force Ka-52 were killed
when the helicopter crashed in
eastern Syria on May 7. The attack
helicopter reportedly went down
during a routine night ight. - The rst prototype of the
Embraer KC-390 tactical transport
was involved in an incident in
Sao Paulo on May 5. According
to reports, the aircraft, which
carries the registration PT-ZNF (c/n
39000001), overran the runway at
Gavião Peixoto Airport during test
runs. No injuries were reported. - US Air Force WC-130H serial
65-0968 operated by the Puerto
Rico Air National Guard’s 156th
Airlift Wing crashed near Savannah,
Georgia, on May 2. The Hercules
went down on a state highway
adjacent to Savannah/Hilton
Head International Airport in Port
Wentworth shortly after take-o.
Five crew and four passengers
were killed. The WC-130H was
reportedly making its nal ight to
Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona, before
being retired.
- Both crew aboard a Russian Air
and Space Force Su-30SM were
killed when the ghter crashed into
the Mediterranean Sea east of Jiblah,
in Syria’s Latakia province, on May
- The mishap reportedly occurred
shortly after the ghter took o from
Hmeimin air base in Latakia.
- L-100-30 5A-DOM (c/n 4992)
operated by the Libyan Arab Air
Force and chartered by Akakus Oil
crashed shortly after take-o from
the el-Sharara oil eld in south-
western Libya on April 29. Three
crew were killed and one survived
when the Hercules went down near
Ubari, around 1.2 miles (2km) from
the oil eld. - Il-38SD serial IN-306 (c/n
- operated by the Indian
Navy was damaged during an
emergency landing at Zhukovsky
air eld, near Moscow, on April 28.
The crew was conducting a test ight
following a maintenance period and
declared an emergency when the
nose landing gear would not extend.
- The pilot of a CF-5A, operated
by the Botswana Defence Force
Air Wing, was killed when the
ghter crashed on a golf course in
Gaborone on April 27. The pilot had
been preparing for a demonstration
associated with the 41st anniversary
of the Botswana Air Force when the
mishap occurred. - Russian Air and Space Force
L-39C serial RF-93310 was heavily
damaged in a wheels-up emergency
landing that occurred after the ghter
ingested a large bird on April 27. The
pilot egressed from the aircraft, which
had been assigned to the Krasnodar
Higher Military Aviation School, and
was not injured. - The pilot of US Air Force F-16C
serial 90-0760 ejected safely from
the ghter while attempting to land
at Lake Havasu City Airport, Arizona,
on April 24. The ghter, assigned to
the 56th Fighter Wing’s 310th Fighter
Squadron, skidded o the runway
after landing and was destroyed. The
pilot had diverted to the airport after
su ering an apparent engine failure.
- US Air Force C-12C serial 76-0160
was damaged when its landing gear
collapsed during an emergency
landing at La Florida Airport, in
Tumaco, Colombia, on April 23. The
airport is located in the south-
western part of Nariño province near
the border with Ecuador. The King
Air is assigned to support the US
Embassy in Bogotá. - An SF260 trainer operated by the
Tunisian Air Force crashed during a
night training exercise near Sfax air
base on April 23. The instructor and
student pilot were killed. - A US Navy F/A-18C ying as
number 5 in the US Navy Flight
Demonstration Squadron, the Blue
Angels, su ered a bird strike in its
port engine during a performance
at the Vero Beach Air Show, Florida,
on April 21. The team’s lead solo
pilot recovered safely to Vero Beach
Regional Airport. - Both pilots aboard a PZL-Bielsko
SZD-54-2 Perkoz were killed
when the Colombian Air Force
glider crashed under unknown
circumstances on April 18. It and
its pilots had been assigned to the
Military Aviation School in Cali.
‘VIPER’ MISHAP IN ARIZONA
SEEN AT LUKE AFB, Arizona
on July 6, 2017, F-16C 90-0760
was the jet forced to make an
emergency landing at Lake
Havasu City Municipal Airport
on April 24. It was assigned to
the 310th Fighter Squadron. The
pilot was forced to eject from the
aircraft around 10.30hrs local time
and was released from the Havasu
Regional Medical Center the same
afternoon. The aircraft was heavily
damaged with everything forward
of the engine intake destroyed.
