olling wheat fields and
pumping oil rigs surround
the town of Hennessey,
Oklahoma, about 70 miles northwest
of Oklahoma City. Two traffic lights,
a bank, and a flower shop share Main
Street with Prairie Quilt, Oklahoma’s
largest quilt shop. Like the cowboys

Chisholm Trail, Prairie Quilt steers
quilters to droves of fabric, carving
a trail of quilting accomplishments.
It goes without saying that
Prairie Quilt, located in a
community of about 2,000 residents,
is off the beaten path. Thanks to
determined marketing, the shop has
become a household name at area
quilt shows, leading customers to
come from miles away to mosey
around the 120-year-old structure.
Quilting delights fill the two-story,
6,000-square-foot space.
“People don’t just come because
we have a lot of fabric,” shop owner
Randa Parrish says. “And they don’t

purposefully come to see the quilt
world’s newest fabric, including
batiks, 1800s reproductions, blenders,
and a generous selection of wide

Prairie Quilt has a particularly
large selection of batik, 1800s
reproductions, and children’s
fabrics, plus three rows of extra-
